What Determines the Cost of a Turnkey Food Factory Setup?

Every project is different — but the factors that determine cost are the same. If you ask the right questions from the outset, you can avoid surprises during the quotation stage.

"How much will a turnkey factory cost?" — the honest answer is not a single figure: it depends on how much weight each factor carries in your project. Two projects with the same capacity can end up with budgets far apart if their building conditions or automation levels differ.

Across our more than 35 years of field experience, the variables that determine cost have consistently fallen into the same six categories. This guide explains how to assess these categories for your own project before requesting a quotation — not as a definitive price list, but as a framework for asking the right questions.

6 FACTORS THAT DETERMINE COST

What You Should Assess Before Requesting a Quote

1. Capacity and Growth Target

The single biggest variable. Planning for not only today's needs but also your 3-5-year growth target can reduce cost per unit above a certain threshold — starting small and expanding frequently is generally more expensive.

2. Building and Infrastructure Condition

If you are setting up in an existing building, check whether it meets requirements for hygienic zoning, ceiling height, floor loading, and water/steam/compressed-air/electricity capacity. If you are building from scratch, this item accounts for a large share of the budget.

3. Equipment Selection and Automation Level

There is a significant difference in both investment and operating cost between a manual or semi-automatic line and a fully automatic, data-collecting line. The right level depends on your product variety and labor costs.

4. Engineering and Project Management

Process design, line layout, commissioning and coordination — often the least visible item, but the one that reduces the risk of delays and errors the most. Skipping this item leads to far more expensive corrections on site.

5. Certification and Export Targets

Are you targeting only the domestic market, or exports to markets such as the EU/US? Standards such as HACCP, BRC and FSSC 22000 directly affect equipment and infrastructure selection — adding them later requires additional investment.

6. Schedule and Flexibility

An accelerated schedule (rush delivery) generally brings additional costs — parallel teams, priority production and express shipping. Projects planned with a flexible schedule are generally budgeted more efficiently.

OPTIMIZING COST

The Right and Wrong Ways
to Reduce Your Budget

The safest way to reduce cost is not to compromise on equipment quality, but to size the project correctly: building a line that is too large is just as expensive as building one that is too small and then having to make a second investment within a few years. If you already have a line, it may also be possible to achieve the same capacity at a lower cost through modernization/optimization before building from scratch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to build a turnkey food factory?

It varies depending on scale and the condition of the building. Single-line projects installed in an existing building can be completed in a few months, while multi-line facilities requiring construction from scratch can take more than a year. We provide a confirmed schedule together with the project proposal after the needs analysis.

Can a turnkey line be installed in an existing building?

Yes, most projects are implemented in an existing building shell. If the building meets requirements for hygienic zoning, structural capacity, energy/water/steam infrastructure and ceiling height, the project can proceed with zero construction cost by investing only in the line and infrastructure.

Does cost increase linearly as capacity increases?

No. Above a certain capacity, the investment cost per unit produced for equipment, automation and infrastructure generally decreases — which is why capacity planning should consider not only today's needs but also your 3-5-year growth target.
